The cities origins begin in 761 AD, when monks built the first Oviedo building called The Church of Saint Vincent. One attraction includes the Pico de Europa Mountains. This beautiful mountain range peeks past an altitude of 2500 meters about sea level. Lying north of the Cantabarian Mountains, the Pico de Europa Mountains can be seen more than 40 kilometers wide. The mountain range is part of a three-group network of mountains called Andarsa or Eastern Massil, El Cornion or Western Massil and Los Urrieles or Central Massil. This mountain range network is part of a whole monumentally green and lush exhibition of northern provincial climactic habitat. However, the bottom half of the mountain is filled with vegetation and the ground remains suitable for easy farming. Yet the top half of the mountain is in stark contrast, with limestone and snow covering the mountain in a white cap. With significant rainfall as the reason for this significantly “Green Spain” territory, it makes Pico de Europa an extra special site for tourist. Caves are another attraction for the capital city Oviedo. These caves of significant sources of Paleolithic art and early cultural icons, and they are of interest to many potholers and paleontologist.
